It was revealed today at Comic-Con, during the Voltron Legendary Defender panel, that the new season, which arrives on Netflix August 4th (yay!), will only be 7 episodes.
But fear not! – the shorter season is purposeful. EP Joaquim Dos Santos assuaged everyone’s worries by stating that the next drop of Voltron episodes, after Season 3, will arrive in October. So just a few months away!
Co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery stated that “the idea is to get you guys more Voltron more often, so we don’t have to wait so long between each drop.”
“It will carry you through the dark times,” Dos Santos added.
The big villain this coming season is Lotor (voiced by AJ Locascio), which “was slightly revealed unintentionally a little earlier” Dos Santos laughed.
“Lotor has a completely different approach than Zarkon had,” Montgomery shared. “Now we can play with our villains a little and they don’t have to be 100% bad from day one.”
Meanwhile, with Shiro having vanished at he end of Season 2, Montgomery said that Season 3 will deal with the team “having no real leader figure to look to,” adding “They need to find someone to continue on with Voltron, but they just don’t know who that is.”
